Blog 1-Here we are in Western Crete

Arrived a few days ago to take up residence in a splendid apartment overlooking the lovely, tiny village of Myrthios which in turn overlooks the not- so-lovely town of Plakias, down on the coast.
Hired a car for the duration (more on that in Blog 2)and have spent the whole of today just driving through wild, bone-dry countryside and isolated mountain villages which look like they haven't changed in centuries. This was mainly along narrow winding roads with the usual sheer drop on one side. (Di and John, these are almost Bhutanese in places, you'd feel right at home...). There are stunning coastal vistas and deep gorges, and the heat once you leave the coast is oppressive.
Checked out both tavernas in Myrthios, one better than the other, but both
good. Doug so happy to be back eating Greek food, poor baby goat for lunch today....

Lots of beaches to chose from, most are mainly stony, and the sea quite rough by the afternoons. Many have a plethora of sunbeds, upon which lie some of the most ghastly, leathery humans I have encountered in a while. I thought the walruses on the beaches in Spitsbergen were quite beautiful compared with what I am seeing here - yuk - Oh well, c'est la vie.....
Next on the agenda is some culture and Minoan history
