Blog 5- Belize, more ruins, more birds and some caves....

Drove to the Guatemalan border, walked through No Mans Land and arrived in Belize. Staying in a plush hotel (with power on ALL the time) in a small town called San Ignacio and have spent the last few days mooching around the pool, visiting locals Mayan ruins and generally enjoying what is an almost-Caribbean type atmosphere. The people are very smiley and friendly, everyone seems to have time to talk to you which is great. The birders dragged me kicking and screaming from my bed at 6am first morning here and were extremely happy to add to their ever-growing total, am told it is circa 71 to date...... Weather hot and humid, up in the 30s but last night we had a tropical storm and today is cooler (thank goodness).
Doug, Bob and I we went to Barton Creek river and spent a couple of hours paddling through the most enormous cathedral-like wet caves, once used
for ceremonial purposes and human sacrifices by the Maya. Archaeologists didn’t study the cave until 1998 when they found large ceramics on high ledges, plus evidence of 20 human remains, including a necklace made of finger bones. Nice! Photos below, Doug and Bob were in the canoe in front of me, with the guide...

and a pretty flower to end with....

Moving on to Belize City tomorrow to catch a tiny plane up to Ambergris Caye, the beach and finally, some diving for me.....Yipee.
