Blog 4 - The jungle and the Tikal Mayan ruins

Well, history bit first, until the civilisations sudden collapse in the 10th c, this was one of the most powerful cities during the Mayan classic period and rises above the canopy of Tikal's jungle setting. Wow- soaring, elegant temples, monkey and toucans everywhere, and not too many tourists! Just spent 2 days at a jungle lodge inside the park and spent those days just wandering through the jungle following Mayan paths and coming across temples everywhere, some cleared, some not. Beautiful and very quiet apart from Howler monkeys.... Weather finally hot and humid, mozzies abound and making a meal of me. Nice for Doug to have foodies and birders with him....
Favourite bird so far is Montezuma Oropendola!
