Blog 2 - Cold back of beyond.....

Finally arrived (after 3 days...) at Inari, almost at the top of Finnish Lapland and yes, it is very very cold. Kitted out to look like I am in a black and red sumo suit but what you look like here is the very last thing on your mind-keeping warm is much more important! We are in a room overlooking a frozen river, the snow is sparkling and very powdery (no snowballing...) and the skies are clear. We spent most of the day dog sledging which was really good fun, came over all Dr Zhivago-ish, wrapped in cosy blankets with Doug driving (?) and me snapping away with the camera. we had 6 dogs in our team, all raring to go, they really are the most amazing creatures. I want to know how on earth they can go so fast and manage to poo at the same time-not quite the romantic image conjured up in the last sentence. Pinky, our lead dog, photo below-not as scary as he looks, always looked totally disgusted when I braked..... We stopped for coffee in a Sami Kota (which looks exactly like a tpee to me) always aware that if nature calls then you are in big trouble because it takes at least 15 minutes to get into (and out of) these wonderful suits.
Spent a couple of hours in the local Sami museum which was excellent, then spent the evening searching for the Aurora borealis which, although it was a beautiful clear night with an almost full moon, failed to happen. Sitting around to 12.30am is hard work..... Maybe tomorrow.....
