Blog 11 - Trondheim and back into Sweden

16 June
Ferry trip number 5 and moving down towards Trondheim.
3,500 miles travelled

Spent a day wandering around Trondheim which was a nice city, with a very long history. King Olav Tryggvason arrived In 997 in a longship and established his farm, with King Olav Haraldsson (later to become Saint Olav) arriving in 1030. Now my Norwegian cousins are called Haraldsson, think there's a connection maybe??

20 June
Now sitting writing this outside a copper mine near a place called Roros, South of Trondheim, which Doug is visiting. Yesterday he did the smelting works museum and slag heaps, today the mine - what more can I say? He is very happy (men are weird...)

Woke this morning to sunshine and snow and was somewhat surprised as we are at around 62oN which is well below the Arctic Circle. Now told that Roros is the coldest place in Norway, temperatures dropping to -50o some winters. Why?

I sum up Roros by quoting their leaflet "The history of Roros is no fairy tale. No, our saga has been dominated by cold, gunpowder, stone and toil-with a sprinkling of sunshine, summer and the promise of a rose garden.(????) On barren earth, vigorous mountain settlements and a pulsating mining town have emerged, thanks to the strength of our men and women, who have been the masters of their own fortunes" Poetical and powerful stuff indeed...... It is also a UNESCO site.

Interesting grass-roofed houses

Well, that's it for Norway. We need to eat out more...so are crossing into Sweden today at a place called Funasdalen, roughly halfway down Sweden.
