Blog 6-Ice Fishing and almost snow mobile fishing!

This morning there was a fresh layer of snow and today there are just the 2 of us going out for the day with our guide Tomi. We set off across lake Inari on the trusty snow mobiles and managed to hit a bit of bother... The ice moves slightly and cracks, then a fresh load of snow falls on top, so you can't see the fact that the water has leaked through the cracks until you hit a deep slushy layer beneath the snow. Which is precisely what we did, Tomi getting stuck and us stopping just in time. Man/woman handled his SM out and then we had to drive really fast through it, not stopping for anything! Very exciting and slightly scary. Again very cold circa -21 out there and of course there is the wind chill to take into account but was snug in my sumo suit and have acquired hand warmers for my mittens. If you lift your visor (because it freezes over inside obscuring your vision) your eyelashes get frosty and eventually stick to the scarf across your mouth and nose! Nice! Makes driving quite tricky at times.
Needless to say we stopped in a shallower part of the ice and drilled holes and dropped down lines but the fish had absolutely nothing to worry about as we had made so much noise getting there, and setting up, that they must have been miles away. Jumping up and down to keep warm couldn't have helped much either so went to what normally would have been an island, found a what is normally a small summer house, lit a fire and cooked sausages. I had more toasted cheese and managed not to eat my mitten by mistake as I did yesterday. The cold really does make you a bit dozy (or should that be dozier???)
Had another fab day, skies clear but am still not very hopeful of seeing those Lights. Back to our room for a defrost in the sauna.

Setting out-10.30 AM

Ooops

In the slush....

Waiting to get across the slush...

Preparing a hole through the ice which is about 40cm at that point of lake

Ice hole- no chance of catching anything as we were far too noisy!

Hut where we lit fire and had another picnic....

D cooking his sausage (so to speak...)
