Blog 10 - Sweet Soul Music and the last blog.....

Travelling by tram yesterday, we started the day with a visit to the Lorraine Motel, the site of Martin Luther King's assignation and now a Museum for the Civil Rights Movement. Extremely interesting but sobering place; and all this took place in my lifetime!
Yep, aforementioned tram.....

We then moved on the in the afternoon to the amazing Stax Studios, which I had been looking forward to since we left the UK. Here I re-lived my youth listening and reading about all the music I grew up with - Booker T, Arthur Conley, Wilson Pickett, Rufus Thomas, Ike Turner, Isaac Hayes; the list just goes on and on. Loved it and it was extremely well done (as almost all American Museums are...) Spent a couple of hours there but sadly it is now no longer used commercially (as the Sun Studio is) and it is in a pretty rundown part of Memphis. We were "encouraged" to get a cab there and back as walking around the neighbourhood was not an option!! our taxi driver regaled us with a tale about a fellow cabbie who was shot dead only a couple of weeks ago picking some dodgy guy up in the Stax area.......

So today I said. Goodbye to my lovely sis and Keith (who are travelled o through the States for the next 3 weeks) and flew back to Atlanta where Doug and I met and travelled on to the UK. Took over 24 hours with lots of hanging around at airports, bus stations etc etc and am now ensconced in bed, writing this and falling asleep. Great trip, good to see Al, Rachel and the boys, ditto June and Keith. Till the next trip xxxxx
