Blog 1 - Scotland June 2011

I'll take the high road....

Writing this from the very far north east of Scotland. Damned if we didn't arrive at this campsite here 50 miles short of John O' Groats and find it being run by the couple who used to own the fish and chip shop in Bovey Tracey – and they remembered us!!! Such a small world. Done a fair bit of driving to get here but the scenery, as ever, becomes more stunning the further north we go. Weather holding up (for Scotland...) just returned from a long walk on a totally deserted beach - sun hot, the sea crystal clear and colder than my freezer. Passed a huge arctic tern breeding colony, incredible to think that those tiny birds fly 10,000 miles every year to come here after spending the winter in Antarctica. Clever little things aren't they?

Yesterday we stopped at a place called Grantown-on-Spey, took a cycle ride in the blazing heat, went to an RSPB Osprey Sanctuary and guess what – we saw osprey! Beautiful. Heading towards our furthest point on this trip of the Orkneys in a few days.
