Blog 8 - Up, Over and Under Mountains

10 June
As I write this I am watching a Norwegian lady polish her car, caravan and I am sure her dog if it would allow her to-very strange behaviour but perhaps she is bored. It all looks very shiny though and makes our camper look positively scruffy...oh well..

Back on the mainland now arriving not too far from Bodo but still well within the arctic circle. Weather turned misty and damp and travelling through more snow-capped mountains again, above the clouds.

I have to say that the Norwegians LOVE their tunnels and bridges and they are exceptionally good at them! You drive towards a massive wall of mountain, then the road suddenly disappears under it for miles and miles. They are fairly narrow inside so approaching lorries (going at speed) can be very very scary..... As there are so many islands/fjords/valleys, they just seem to build massive bridges to negotiate them, sometimes just using a bridge to straighten a road!! We went through 18 tunnels today in just a 60 mile stretch - very impressive.

Moving on downwards now, off to visit the Saltstraumen Maelstrom -a churning 20 knot watery chaos that shifts over 400 million cubic metres of water one way, then the other, every 6 hours. No idea how much 400 million cubic metres is but it sounds a lot!!!
