Blog 1 Arrived in Santiago, Chile......

Monday 7 April
Finally arrived after an interminable journey, mainly with the appalling Iberian Airline, and have survived on lettuce and tomatoes for the last two days. It is a joy to be back in Santiago and the sun is shining, although as we flew in at dawn it was a bit nippy.

Were whisked off from the airport by Julio and Leonardo (?) for a city tour - just what we needed after 30 hours on the move!! Drove (and ambled) through parks and old buildings, super smart modern buildings, various markets and residential streets. Lovely city if somewhat overwhelming (and a bit smoggy) when tired.... Somehow we ended up in the usual emporium where Di and I seemed to buy two pairs of lapis lazuli earring each - how did that happen?

Highlight for the boys was the Coffee with Legs cafe - forget baristas - here the ladies who serve you are extremely skimpily dressed in the shortest skirts and lowest tops seen in a while. Apparently they used to serve coffee in string bikinis but for some reason (maybe because it's getting cooler here....or our guide thought we might be too old for the real deal..) they were dressed, if that's what you call it!! Nice coffee though and the caffeine boost kept us going through the rest of the day.

Now settled in a nice hotel in a leafy street within walking distance of the main thoroughfare and looking forward to some serious sleep. John's ankle is holding up - he fractured it skiing just over 4 weeks ago and has made a remarkable recovery. We just plod along which suits me fine.

Luckily for us the museums are closed on a Monday so we will see the most famous tomorrow - Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino.....after vineyard for tastings at 10.00 in the mornings!! Holidays are great eh?

Doug searching for a Sauvignon grape to taste!
