Buenos Aires, the City of Tango, Massive Steaks and Dog Walkers

With temperatures in the high 20s, we have walked for miles around Buenos Aires. The Portenos (people of BA) like to shop (I´m in heaven), talk politics and demonstrate (there are armed police everywhere..) and have plastic surgery it seems (highest rate in the world so the books say...). Food is great and very cheap - people watching is fascinating here as they love to dress up (the men stare and the women ignore them whilst showing off all that surgery....).

Yesterday was a public holiday (Immaculate Conception Day) so we walked to the Parque Natural Y Reserva Ecologica and Doug watched birds (the feathery kind this time). BA has lots of open grassy spaces, water and trees for such a big city. Had to cross a 16 lane road (widest in the world they say) and I can tell you that it was very scary marching across an 8 lane pedestrian crossing with all those cars just revving up for the green light! Just returned from the Cemeterio de Recoleta where we saw Eva Peron´s grave, then went hunting for the legendary professional dog walkers - yep a lot of people here are too lazy or busy to walk their own! Also took in the Museo Nacional de Belles Artes for a bit of art and culture then hit the local markets. Saving tango for New Year´s Eve on our return visit - just too much to see and not enough time (or energy at the moment). Same goes for Mate and its ritual - the preparation and consumption of a bitter tea-like drink a cultural treat we are told!!! Flying down to Ushuaia tomorrow morning to find that boat.... Hope this won't be the last blog entry but can't tell what conditions will be like.
