After several stops along the highway, (including passing through Johnson where Lyndon B Johnson was born and raised) finally arrived in Fredericksburg which was originally an old German township surrounded by hill country - lots of pretty, historic old buildings. Headed for the first winery we found for a sample of Texan wine, not the best we have ever had! (more to come I am told....) Sampled some German beer and did a little shopping. Weather still warm and feeling good (mostly), the others eating a fair bit, American food portions are all that you read about!
Next day headed out to Luckenbach, population 28, founded 1886 = old by American standards! Made famous by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings singing about “In Luckenback, Texas ain't nobody feelin' no pain... Lot of “characters” hanging out with musicians picking out toons under a 500 year old oak tree – yep, laid back ain't the word for it..... Stopped at a couple of vineyards for a tasting, bought some dessert wine but still not overly impressed with the wine so far, having said that we manage to drink a fair bit of the stuff. Just plain picky.... Now driving back on the freeway in Rachel's big Grand Cherokee 5.7lrr truck and it has started to rain.
Good road trip, Texas is just so huge. Al & Rachel great hosts and everyone we have met have been very friendly and genuinely seem to be interested in talking to you. Lots of bikers on the roads, mainly with no helmets, and looking like Easy Rider. Still getting my head around the fact that everyone here seems to have guns, go hunting and drive these monster trucks, including a fair few Hummers! Fuel very cheap though. Just like the movies..............Just keep seeing the most amazingly huge campervans, makes ours look like a dinky toy!!!
Hill Country
